Kovalev talks in advance of Canelo
Sergey Kovalev will be the underdog in Las Vegas. He’ll be fighting on Canelo’s home turf.

“Yeah, it’s going to be my biggest win. Yes, of course. This is the biggest name I fought after Bernard Hopkins…”

Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev hasn’t always chosen his words with care. Loose lips may sink ships, but they don’t sink championship runs. A great fighter in his prime, a great fighter still, Kovalev is elite among elites, another whose name is Canelo Alvarez.

In advance of the November 2 defense of his WBO light heavyweight title at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Sergey Kovalev spoke on an international teleconference call about his upcoming 12-round bout against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez streamed on DAZN.

“This is huge goal in my boxing career from when I was a young guy,” Kovalev said. “Canelo is really talented and really famous, so this is a lot of pressure to me. But believe me, I’m in boxing already since I was 11 years old and I should be fine. It’s nothing for me. I should just get inside the ring and do my best job.”

Someone asked Kovalev if he was surprised Canelo called his bluff.

“I respect Canelo because he goes right now up two divisions, and this is a huge goal for him and also for myself. Canelo wants to try get title in light heavyweight division, and if he will not get the title nobody will say, ‘Eh you lose.’ He has nothing to lose. He is just trying. But I should defend my title. I will defend my title. If I lose, I lose more than Canelo lose. Canelo, he is trying to make his history but I’m here. I’m in my position.”

Kovalev was asked if thinks Canelo believes he’ll be easier than a third fight with Golovkin.

Kovalev objected.

“I don’t think that he is avoiding the fight against GGG,” he said, “but he now wants to make history. He wants to face me because I am the best in the light heavyweight division… Yeah, it’s going to be my biggest win. Yes, of course. This is the biggest name I fought after Bernard Hopkins.”

Krusher will be the underdog in Las Vegas. He’ll be fighting on Canelo’s home turf. The boxing judges know him well. Canelo wins close decisions. Kovalev has already rolled snake eyes on The Strip. It could happen again. Does he have to knockout Canelo if he has any chance of winning? Canelo’s got a great chin. He also punches back.

Kovalev thought about it for a second. “That’s not my goal,” he said. “My goal [is] to get the victory by any costs.”

@Kid…. Got ya. Been big on reading this site since about 2012 and it seemed like ‘Your Name’ would catch flak from time to time but that could be anyone. Thank you

Joe G, that was me. I often forget to put in my name, but I usually correct it.

Don’t know who @Your Name is but I believe Canelo gets a stoppage as well.

If it did hit the cards, draw is the only possibility Kov “wins” because he will never get the nod over Red. Once, twice, three times….. A sucker!

I like both these guys! Hmmm
Don’t like the corrupt judges in Vegas because KOvalev will have to knock him out.
From a boxing standpoint the good bigger man should win (age aside). If Sergey uses his jab to thwart Canelo advances he will easily win because Canelo has to get inside and get KOvalev to ropes. Stay away from the ropes. Canelo keeps hands high to block jabs and will try to hook. Move to Canelo’s right, pot shot him and move away till it is time. Pound Canel’os forearms and shoulders till hands come down, Sergey controls the distance.
There has not been any special tampering from Canelo camp about weigh-in time and weight, so Sergey will be coming into ring as a HW.

Kovelev will be broken down by Canelo’s body work and then KOd in the late rounds.

Kovalev will STOP Canelo. Kovalev will have a much easier time than expected and this fight will surprise a lot of people. Canelo made a BIG mistake in choosing Kovalev.
